on July 4, 1999 during the Kargil war Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was the leading Scout of a team tasked to capturing flat top post, which was captured by the Pakistanis. The team was stuck half way due the heavy machine gun fire from one of the enemy bunkers some 150 meters away.  Rifleman Sanjay Kumar understood the severity of the situation and crawled alone up the ledge, along a flank, and attacked the enemy bunker through a hail of automatic fire. Almost immediately he got shot in his chest and forearm that left him bleeding heavily. In spite of his wounded condition he continued to charge towards the enemy bunker position. He killed 3 enemies in hand-to-hand combat. He then picked an enemy machine gun and attacked the second bunker. The enemies were taken by surprise. They got scared and got killed by Sanjay Kumar while trying to run. His act of bravery and courage inspired his platoon and they attacked and captured the flat top post.

Rifleman Sanjay Kumar was awarded with India’s highest wartime gallantry medal Param Vir Chakra for his conspicuous gallantry, cool courage and devotion to duty of an exceptionally high order in the face of the enemy.
